THE UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE AND
DENTISTRY OF NEW JERSEY Newark, New Jersey
Special
Operations Vehicles
The University Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey
has placed three Special Operation Vehicles (SOVs)
in service. They will be deployed to three separate
strategic sites throughout the state for rapid intervention
response.
SOV North will be stationed in Newark;
SOV Central will be stationed in New Brunswick; and
SOV South will be stationed in Camden.
The vehicles were designed by Hackney
to accommodate specific requirements for responses
to Bio-Terrorism incidents and incidents that require
deployment of temporary hospital sites. The 102"
wide bodies were designed to store and transport multiple
Western Shelter portable hospitals and related support
equipment.
The 25.5-ft long bodies feature
rear command centers with communications and logistics
support. These rooms are environmentally controlled.
Additional command operations can be handled under
the rear awning via a fold-down desk. Located behind
the fold-down desk are power and phone connections.
Located on the recessed roof are three storage compartments;
one on each side and one across the forward section.
Between the forward compartment and the front of the
body is a recessed area that accommodates a telescoping
light tower with six (6) MagnaFire flood lights that
articulate in opposing directions for lighting in
two different directions simultaneously.
Other than the light tower, a 25,000
watt PTO generator powers two 900 watt tripod flood
lights, roof air conditioner, command center heater,
two (2) 240VAC Hannay cord reels with split circuit
junction boxes and multiple outlets. Each compartment
is additionally lighted by 110-volt fluorescent lights.
The chassis selected was a Freightliner
M2 with 330 hp engine.
